Jalawe-Chiweta community planting trees to mitigate climate change supported by Global Environmental facility-GEF Through UNDP Malawi

Promoting community actions towards proper land use and forestry management project in Rumphi district’’ has started with a welcome note from community. Majority of people including stakeholders around Jalawe – Mchenga Coalmines areas have welcomed the project and pledged total commitment and support to achieve the project goal. This has been revealed during community sensitization campaigns conducted in surrounding communities. Stakeholders have been contacted to take part in the project activities and majority of them have shown keen interest in the project and have taken part in the implementation of the project including surrounding schools.

Currently a total of 8145 tree seedlings have been planted already in 5 schools and 8 VDCs (Village development committees)  in two (Traditional Authority) T/As of Njukula (Mwamlowe) and Mwalweni along Jalawe – Mchenga areas. As an on-going activity, with partnership with Mchenga Coalmines, Community expect to plant over 10,000 tree seedlings by the end of April 2019. Mchenga Coalmines has pledged to raise 50,000 tree seedlings within 2 years and partner with Mtende Homecraft Foundation in support of the Project. This is a welcome development to Project and Local Leaders have already granted more land within Chiweta hills for Afforestation project.
