MTENDE AFFORESTATION PROGRAMME 2023

The ‘Community action towards forests and environmental management project’ is Community initiative trying to restore forests and biodiversity, reduce poverty among vulnerable community within the landscape /seascape of Livingstonia Escarpments and Nyika National Park through community engagement in afforestation and forest regeneration and people livelihood support programs for sustainable rural livelihood.

According to the Ministry Of Natural Resources, Energy And Mining - national charcoal strategy 2017-2027 , More than 97% of households in Malawi rely on illegally and unsustainably sourced biomass (charcoal and firewood) for domestic cooking and heating energy. This has resulted in high levels of deforestation and land degradation throughout the country, with downstream negative impacts on water availability, hydropower-generating capacity, and more broadly, vulnerability of Malawians to climate change.

The situation has not spared Livingstonia community in Rumphi district, through our recent findings show that 83% of the households in the area are in extreme poverty and depends on forests and natural resources as their major source of income.
